How Does Steam Pricing Work in Turkey? Why Games Are Priced in Dollars, and How Much You Really Pay
Why does Steam use US dollars in Turkey, how does MENA-USD regional pricing work, and how do you estimate what your card will be charged? How to tell whether a game's Turkey price is good, and the traps to avoid.

A brief history: From Turkish lira to US dollars

For many years, Steam displayed prices in Turkish lira, and publishers often set very low prices for the Turkish market. But the lira's rapid depreciation made it difficult to keep those prices up to date.
Valve changed the system on November 20, 2023: Steam switched from Turkish lira to US dollars in Turkey, and from Argentine pesos to US dollars in Argentina. Turkey joined a new pricing region called "MENA-USD," covering several countries in the Middle East and North Africa, while Argentina joined "LATAM-USD." Existing Turkish-lira balances in users' Steam Wallets were converted to dollars at the exchange rate used that day.
Watch out for a false claim: In April 2026, reports circulated suggesting that Steam would bring back Turkish-lira pricing. One widely shared article was later acknowledged by its publisher to have been an April Fools' joke. As of October 21, 2026, the Turkish Steam store still uses MENA-USD pricing.
Same currency, different regional prices

This is where things get confusing. Turkey and the United States use the same currency on Steam: the US dollar. What can differ is the price of a game. Publishers can set a separate price for the MENA-USD region, and that price applies across the countries in the region, not just Turkey.
Valve recommends lower prices for MENA-USD than for the US market. But these are suggestions, not requirements. Each publisher decides what to charge in the region. When the system changed in 2023, games without a separate MENA-USD price defaulted to their regular US-dollar price.
As a result, you'll generally encounter two types of pricing on Steam in Turkey:
- Games with regional pricing: Their prices in Turkey are significantly lower than in the United States. Some independent developers and major publishers offer these prices.
- Games at US prices: They cost the same in Turkey as they do in the United States—for example, $69.99.
Comparisons made when the switch happened in 2023 showed some games costing less than half their US price in Turkey, while others were priced identically. Those differences still exist. So there's no single answer to "Are Steam games cheap in Turkey?" It depends on the game and its publisher.
How is the amount charged to your card calculated?

Steam charges in US dollars. If you pay with a card billed in Turkish lira, the transaction is converted to lira according to your card network's and bank's foreign-currency rules. The card network's exchange rate, your bank's applied rate, and any additional charges can all affect the result. The exchange rate and processing date may also mean that the amount on your statement differs from the store price multiplied by the exchange rate you saw online.
Example: How much does a $10 Steam game cost in lira?
This is an illustration, not a live exchange rate. Your actual cost depends on the rate applied to your transaction and your bank's terms.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Game price | $10 |
| Example transaction rate (1 USD) | ₺45 |
| Amount after currency conversion | ₺450 |
| Example additional fee (2%) | ₺9 |
| Estimated total | ₺459 |
To estimate your own cost, multiply the price shown on Steam by the rate your bank applies—or is likely to apply—to the transaction, then add any foreign-currency transaction fee. Remember that your bank's rate may not match the live market rate displayed on a currency website. You can check its fee schedule or ask customer service for the relevant terms.
There are a few ways to potentially reduce the difference:
- Check your bank's terms for international and foreign-currency purchases.
- Compare cards that can be linked to foreign-currency accounts or offer better conditions for international transactions.
- Steam Wallet codes are another option. According to Steam, Wallet codes can be converted into your account's currency when redeemed. Before buying one, check its terms, any restrictions, and the seller's reliability. Don't confuse Wallet codes with game activation keys, which can have different regional restrictions.
How can you tell whether a game's Turkey price is good?
The Steam store normally shows the price for your own region. One of the easiest ways to see whether a game has a regional discount or simply uses the US price is SteamDB. On a game's SteamDB page, you can compare prices across regions, check the MENA-USD price against the US price, and see its lowest recorded price. We explain the process step by step in our SteamDB guide.
One caveat: You may encounter older Turkish-lira price history from before 2023. Comparing those historical lira prices directly with today's dollar prices can be misleading. For a more consistent comparison, focus on the period after November 2023.
As a general rule:
- If the Turkey price matches the US price, there's no regional price advantage. It may be worth waiting for a larger sale.
- If the Turkey price is substantially below the US price, you're already benefiting from regional pricing. An additional sale can bring the price down even further. During Steam Cooking Fest on October 12–19, 2026, for example, PlateUp! dropped from $10.49 to $1.04 in the Turkish pricing region.
Can you use a VPN to buy from another region?
You may come across advice suggesting that you use a VPN or change your account region to access lower prices in another country. Steam determines your store country based on your location and payment method. Misrepresenting your location to circumvent regional pricing violates Steam's terms and can lead to account restrictions. Saving a few dollars isn't worth putting a game library you've spent years building at risk.
Can you gift a game to someone abroad? In July 2026, Steam made it easier to send games to friends in other pricing regions. When gifting a game to a Steam friend abroad, the higher price in the recipient's region may now be applied at checkout. Some restrictions still apply depending on the region or game, so check the displayed price and gift eligibility before paying.
Five tips for buying games more wisely on Steam

- Use your wishlist. Add games you're interested in, and Steam can notify you when they go on sale.
- Compare the Turkey and US prices. SteamDB makes this quick and easy.
- Watch for major sales. Steam's seasonal sales and themed festivals that include discounts are good opportunities to find deals. Not every festival is a sale, though: Steam Next Fest, for example, focuses on free demos of upcoming games. See our Steam events calendar for the events scheduled through the end of the year.
- Know your bank's foreign-currency terms. Even a small fee difference adds up on expensive purchases.
- Don't miss free games. We update our weekly free and cheap games roundup with offers from Steam, Epic, and other stores.
Steam's pricing system in Turkey may look complicated at first, but the basic idea is simple: the currency is the same US dollar, while game prices can vary by region. Once you understand that distinction, it's much easier to judge whether a game is a good deal and estimate how much your card will actually be charged.
